~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~
Selina finds herself back in the control unit with the floor to ceiling windows looking out into the dark space full of stars, planets, and the sorts. It was also, where she spent her first couple of years when she was younger. Approximately, it was an half an hour till the multitude of star splattered ships landed on the planet they originated. Everything was ready or about as ready as they can ever be. The food that was specially prepared for today is cooling or staying warm in the various assigned chambers. The entertainment was getting ready for their possible debut on Miris. The speech complete sounding very Selina-ish and a bit leader-y. The interior of the ship was a spotless white, almost as white as it was all those years ago when a different leader was on this ship.
She
sighs remembering how she feared the perfectness of everything on this
ship. How there was not a stain or scar anywhere. Nothing ever seemed to break
or look like it was broken. She smiled a bit as she remembered how happy she
used to be whenever she was in this room. The only room she knows of that’s not
white or spotless. But since she has taken over the leadership role, various
scars have started to form everywhere each one quickly fixed. Only to have it
appear again somewhere else. Imperfectness has started to show on this ship and
not the yelling kind of imperfectness, the good imperfectness. The flaws that
refuse to get fixed no matter what. And she smiles a bit at that, her fear of
the ships’ perfectness dwindling into a wine from Earth.
She
takes a small sip of the wine, suppressing some memories of some foolish love.
Her eyes look outside into the space beyond full of stars, planets, asteroids,
comets, debris, and nothingness. They were trying to look for some familiar
landmark. Only landmarks change, especially after about twenty years. She sighs
and hopes that they aren’t that far from Miris. The name was achingly familiar
though depressing, with gray everywhere, and every manmade item crushed by the
wildlife around it. Though will it still be like that when the Mirian’s landed?
Oh
god, I hope not, Selina thinks to herself while taking another sip of wine,
then it means that Nature haven’t been particularly creative over the years.
She smiles a bit bitterly, remembering Nature taking over causing a war
leaving many dead especially the Mirians. Leaving the remaining Mirians to go
to Earth, only to have a bunch of trouble start, starting from when the
original Mirians got assassinated, to making the new leader Selina make the
choice of going back to their home planet, Miris.
Mutters
can be heard behind the closed door leading to the actual control unit with the
ship’s navigational tools. Some sound excited others nervous as the minutes
start to tick down. Selina smiles and sets down her glass of wine on the table
that sits nearby. She takes her folded lilbus from her pocket and quickly
unfolds it. Her eyes resting on the numbers in the bottom right corner of her
screen ticking down to the supposed landing. She checks her messages each one
telling her good luck and to have fun on camera as well as other stuff about
the landing. Footsteps can be heard outside the other closed door as the
photographers, historians, crew people, and other people of such importance
wait to be let in the control unit.
After
pressing a couple of controls on her lilbus the door to the control unit slides
open as everyone prepares to take their place. Selina’s heart beats excitedly
knowing she’ll be home in just a matter of minutes. After having her makeup
redone, her wine removed, and the wire thin microphone quickly fitted and
hidden under a layer of makeup, the camera settled up and other matters of
importance everyone was ready or as ready as everyone will ever be.
Selina turns around so she’s
looking out of the window. The stars now looking achingly familiar that it
seems it hasn’t changed at all for the last two decades. Everyone knows it will
be a matter of seconds before Miris comes into view. A childlike smile on
everyone’s faces that bursts into cheers of joy as the first hint of gray peeps
among the purple, white, blue, red, yellow, and orange, and other colors of the
universe. The gray steadily grows and bits of brownish-orange can be seen as
well. At first confusion grows on everyone’s faces as they see the
brownish-orange, but Selina still remains smiling. Recognizing it as the still
same old, Miris only with a bit of color added to it.
Once they get closer enough to see
the details more clearly, it is in fact the same old Miris. Bits of crumbled
buildings can still be seen though plant life is quickly growing over it.
Pictures are quickly being taken, words are being written, the whole thing
being captured on film, every Mirian waiting to see what their leader’s
reaction will be.
“Welcome home,” says Selina a childish
smile still on her face. Only this time it is laced with a bit of sadness, as
the familiar yet unfamiliar comes into view. Everyone cheers again not noticing
the dread that has started to form as each second ticks closer to the landing.
